Chapter 5 · Lesson 5 of 5

Counting to 8

Before you move, count. Two numbers matter: how many points you need, and how many your opponent needs.

When they're far behind, take the easy point and win on your Hold. When they're one point from winning, deny their Hold first, or win this turn.

Quick check

You're on 6, they're on 7 and control B. It's your turn. What must you do?

Predict

Garen is on 7 and holds B. Your Flame Chompers takes empty A instead: you go to 7. What happens next?

Make your guess, then play the drill to find out.

Words from this lesson

Deny
Taking or emptying a battlefield before the opponent's turn starts, so they can't Hold it.

From the Core Rules (2026-10-09): 469–473 — Scoring · 471 — Hold · 473 — the Final Point · 323.1 — Winning

  1. 1No Rush

You're on 6 and Garen is on 4. He holds B with a Demacian Diplomat (2). You have one unit: one Conquer today makes 7, and a Hold at the start of your next turn makes 8. At 4, Garen can't reach 8 in one turn. Send Flame Chompers to A or B, end your turn, and win on your next one.

    Need a hint?

Drag Flame Chompers to either battlefield, Confirm, then End Turn: your Hold next turn is the 8th point.

  2. 2Deny the Hold

Same board, but Garen is on 7, and his Demacian Diplomat (2) holds B. If he still controls B when his turn starts, his Hold is the 8th point; his other Diplomat will walk into A. Take B away from him today, then win with your own Hold.

    Need a hint?

Attack B with Flame Chompers (3 beats 2), Confirm, then End Turn.
