Chapter 8 · Lesson 4 of 7

When to Fight, When to Hold

Not every fight is worth it. Before you attack, ask two things. What is their wall really worth? And what can they hit on their turn?

Sometimes the best move is not to attack. If you can win on your next turn by keeping a battlefield, protect it.

Quick check

A battlefield holds a Towering Combatant (3, [Shield 2], [Tank]) and a Diplomat (2). You attack with 6 Might. Can you kill both?

Predict

Your Shadowblade Lurker (5) attacks alone into Lee Sin's Sunlit Guardian (3, [Shield], [Tank]) and Apprentice Smith (2). What happens to the Smith?

Make your guess, then play the drill to find out.

Words from this lesson

Threat
A unit or card that can hurt you on their turn, such as a unit that can reach a battlefield you hold.
Overcommit
Sending so many units into a fight that nothing is left to guard what they can still reach.

From the Core Rules (2026-10-09): 815 — Tank · 814 — Shield · 471 — Hold · 188 — Control · 467 — Damage Step

3 drills

  1. 1Count the Wall

You're on 7 and B is already scored: take A and you win. Lee Sin holds A with a Sunlit Guardian (3, [Shield], [Tank]: 4 on defence, and it must take its lethal damage first) and an Apprentice Smith (2). You have Shadowblade Lurker (5) and Demacian Diplomat (2). Count before you swing.

    Need a hint?

Select Shadowblade Lurker and Demacian Diplomat, drag both to A together, and Confirm: 4 of your damage goes to the Guardian first, 2 to the Smith.

  2. 2Home Is the Battlefield

You're on 6 and held B this turn. Garen is on 6 and holds A with a Demacian Diplomat (2); his Vanguard Sergeant (4) waits, exhausted, at his base and can attack either battlefield on his turn. Your Laurent Bladekeeper (3, [Ganking]) holds B and your Shadowblade Lurker (5) is ready at base. Take A today and still own a battlefield when your next turn starts: that Hold is your 8th point.

    Need a hint?

Drag Shadowblade Lurker to A and Confirm, leave the Bladekeeper on B, then End Turn and press Next through Garen's turn.

  3. 3Not Worth the Fight

You're on 7 and held B this turn, so taking A now would win. Garen (6) holds A with a Towering Combatant (3, [Shield 2], [Tank]) and a Demacian Diplomat (2); his Vanguard Sergeant (4) waits, exhausted, at his base. Your Laurent Bladekeeper (3) is at B and your Shipyard Skulker (3) at base. Count what A really is before you attack. If you can't win this turn, make sure you win on your next.

    Need a hint?

Drag Shipyard Skulker to B, leave the Bladekeeper there, and End Turn.
