Chapter 2 · Lesson 1 of 5

Runes

Cards cost resources, and runes make them. The number in a card's top-left corner is its Energy; the rune icon under it, like [Fury], is its Power. Together they are the cost. You bring a separate Rune Deck of 12 runes. Each turn you channel 2 of them: you put them from your Rune Deck onto the board, ready to use.

What you add goes into your Rune Pool until you spend it. The pool empties at the start of each Main Phase and at the end of each turn, so spend it while it lasts. On the table you don't have to tap anything yourself: play the card and the runes pay for it.

One rune gives at most 1 Energy and 1 Power, so 6 runes pay at most 6 Energy and 6 Power. A recycled rune leaves the board, so tap runes freely but recycle only when you need the Power.

Quick check

You have 3 runes on the board. What is the most Energy you can add?

Quick check

You recycle a Fury rune. What do you get?

Predict

Hextech Ray costs 1 Energy and 1 Fury Power. You have exactly one rune, a Fury one. Can you play it?

Make your guess, then play the drill to find out.

Some cards also carry keywords in brackets, like [Action], [Assault] or [Ganking]. Each one is short for a rule that a later lesson explains. None of them matters in this drill.

  1. 1Pay with Runes

You're on 7 and B is already scored. Their Laurent Bladekeeper (3 Might) guards A, and your Flame Chompers (3) would only trade with it. Hextech Ray deals 3 to a unit at a battlefield. It costs 1 Energy and 1 Fury Power, and your two runes can pay that. Ray the Bladekeeper, then walk Chompers into A.

    Need a hint?

Click Hextech Ray in your hand and target the Bladekeeper at A; your runes pay for it. Then drag Flame Chompers to A and Confirm.

  2. 2One Rune, Both Halves

You have a single Fury rune, and Hextech Ray costs 1 Energy and 1 Fury Power. One rune can pay both: tap it for the Energy, then recycle it for the Power. Ray their Kinkou Initiate (3 Might) at A, then walk Flame Chompers into A.

    Need a hint?

Click Hextech Ray and target the Initiate; your one rune pays both the Energy and the Power. Then drag Flame Chompers to A and Confirm.
